Will Target Do Price Adjustments?

Retailers frequently adjust prices, leading to consumer interest in price adjustment policies. Many major retailers, including Target, offer policies that allow customers to obtain a lower price if an item’s cost decreases shortly after purchase.

Target’s Price Adjustment Policy Overview

Target maintains a comprehensive price adjustment policy. This policy encompasses two primary mechanisms: price matching and post-purchase price adjustments. Price matching allows a customer to secure a lower price at the time of purchase if an identical item is found for less. Conversely, a post-purchase price adjustment enables a refund of the price difference if an item’s price drops after the initial transaction. These policies apply to items sold directly by Target, whether in stores or on Target.com.

While Target aims to provide competitive pricing, recent policy updates have significantly narrowed the scope of external price matching. As of late July 2025, Target’s price match guarantee primarily focuses on its own pricing, meaning it will match lower prices found within Target’s ecosystem, including Target.com, the Target app, and other Target stores. This shift means Target no longer matches prices from external competitors like Amazon or Walmart.

Conditions for Price Matching

To qualify for a price match at Target, several specific conditions must be met at the time of purchase. The item in question must be identical in all aspects, including brand name, size, weight, color, quantity, and model number. The lower price must be listed and valid at the time of the request, and Target team members must be able to verify it. Screenshots or pictures of the lower price are generally not accepted; customers need to present a digital version of the ad on their mobile device or a printed ad.

Items sold by Target Plus partners may also be eligible for a price match if the identical item is found for less from the same Target Plus Partner on Target.com. Exclusions apply to various items and scenarios, such as clearance, closeout, liquidation sales, damaged, used, open-package, or refurbished items.

Other exclusions include promotional gift card offers, registry completion coupons, or Target coupons used with the original purchase. Prices requiring a login or cart access to view, and typographical errors, also do not qualify.

Conditions for Post-Purchase Price Adjustments

Target’s policy also allows for price adjustments after a purchase, typically when the price of an item drops within a specified timeframe. Customers can request a post-purchase price adjustment if the identical item is found for a lower price at Target.com, in Target stores, or through a Target Circle deal within 14 days of the original purchase. If a lower price is identified within this period, Target will refund the difference to the original form of payment.

Similar to price matching, post-purchase adjustments require the item to be identical in every detail, including brand, size, weight, color, and model number. Exclusions for post-purchase adjustments largely mirror those for price matching. Additionally, special promotional events or holiday guarantees might have specific limitations; for instance, during holiday shopping seasons, the adjustment window may extend, but exclusions for certain deals like doorbusters or gift card offers often remain. Target Circle Bonuses and gift card offers cannot be combined with a price adjustment.

How to Request an Adjustment

For an immediate price match during an in-store checkout, customers should present proof of the current lower price to a Target team member. Acceptable proof includes a digital ad displayed on a mobile device or an entire printed advertisement; screenshots are not valid. The team member will then verify the price and apply the adjustment.

For post-purchase price adjustments or online orders, the process can be completed in-store or through Target’s customer service channels. In-store, customers should visit the Guest Services desk or any checkout lane with their original receipt or packing slip, or an electronic receipt from their Target account, within 14 days of purchase. The item itself typically does not need to be brought back unless it is being returned.

They will need to provide their order number and item details to the representative, who will then verify the lower price and process the refund to the original payment method.
