Will Target Do a Price Adjustment? How the Policy Works

Demystify Target's price adjustment policy. Understand eligibility criteria and the straightforward process to request a price adjustment.

A price adjustment, also known as a price match, allows a customer to receive a refund for the difference in price if an item they purchased goes on sale or is found for a lower price at Target after the initial transaction. Target offers this service to ensure shoppers receive competitive pricing on items purchased from their stores or website. This policy applies specifically to price drops within Target’s own sales channels.

Eligibility for Price Adjustments

To qualify for a price adjustment, the item must have been purchased within the last 14 days. This applies to both in-store and online purchases. The item for which an adjustment is sought must be identical to the one with the lower price. This means the brand name, size, weight, color, quantity, and model number must all match precisely.

Proof of the lower price is required, such as a digital ad displayed on a mobile device or the active price on Target.com. For items purchased in a Target store that are now cheaper on Target.com, or vice versa, the lower price must be valid and verifiable at the time of the request. An original receipt, whether physical or digital, or a packing slip is also required to confirm the initial purchase.

Items Not Eligible for Price Adjustments

Certain items are excluded from Target’s price adjustment policy. This includes merchandise marked as clearance, closeout, liquidation, or refurbished. Damaged, used, or sold in open packaging items are also not eligible for a price adjustment. Typographical errors in pricing, whether by Target or another source, are not honored for adjustments.

Promotional offers such as those involving gift cards, coupons, loyalty programs, or credit card offers do not qualify. Bundled offers, free items, rebates, or mail-in promotions are also excluded. Specific product categories, including alcohol (where prohibited by law), mobile phone services or plans, warranties, and pharmacy or clinic purchases, are not eligible. Prices that require a customer to log in or add an item to their cart to view are also excluded from consideration.

How to Submit a Price Adjustment Request

If you made your purchase in a Target store, visit the Guest Services desk or any open checkout lane. You will need to present your original receipt (paper or digital). Additionally, be prepared to show verifiable proof of the current lower price, such as the digital advertisement on your mobile device or the item’s listing on Target.com.

For purchases made on Target.com or through the Target app, you can contact Target Guest Services. This can be done by calling 1-800-591-3869 or by utilizing the online chat feature available on Target.com. When contacting Guest Services, have your order number and the item details readily available. You will also need to provide the digital proof of the lower price.

Once your request is processed and approved, the refund for the price difference will be issued back to your original payment method. This typically occurs within 3 to 5 business days. If the original purchase was made using a Target gift card, the refund will be provided in the form of a new Target gift card.
