For example, if the original payment was an eCheck, the refund remains pending until the eCheck clears the sender’s bank, which can take several business days.
In contrast, a “completed” status signifies that the funds have successfully returned to your original payment method. This stage confirms that PayPal has finished its part of the process, and the money should either be in your PayPal balance or en route to your linked bank account or credit card. Other statuses, such as “on hold” or “failed,” might appear if there are issues like the seller’s bank not clearing the funds or a problem with the recipient’s account.
The time for a PayPal refund to move from pending to completed is primarily influenced by the original payment method. Refunds to a PayPal balance are typically the fastest, often appearing the same day. If the initial payment was made using a bank account, the refund usually takes 3 to 5 business days to clear, as it involves transfers through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network.
Refunds to a debit or credit card can take longer due to the external bank or card issuer’s processing times. Even after PayPal processes the refund within one business day, the card issuer may require an additional 3 to 10 business days, or up to 1 to 2 billing cycles (which can be up to 30 days), to post the funds. This variance depends on the financial institution’s specific policies. Non-business days, such as weekends and public holidays, also extend processing times, as banks and financial networks do not typically operate on these days.

This internal review ensures the transaction’s legitimacy and compliance with regulations.
