Net pay is the amount an employee receives after all mandatory and voluntary deductions have been subtracted from their gross pay. This is commonly referred to as “take-home pay” because it is the final amount deposited into an employee’s bank account or provided as a physical check. Voluntary deductions are those an employee opts into. Common examples include contributions to retirement plans like a traditional 401(k), which are pre-tax deductions that lower taxable income. Health, dental, and vision insurance premiums are often deducted on a pre-tax basis, reducing the amount of income subject to taxes. Other voluntary deductions, such as Roth 401(k) contributions, union dues, or charitable donations, are post-tax, meaning they are taken out after taxes have been calculated.
