Where Can You Get Federal and State Tax Forms?

Filing taxes requires the correct forms. Learn the official methods for getting federal documents from the IRS and forms from your state's tax agency.

Filing your annual income taxes requires specific documents, and knowing where to find them is the first step in the process. Taxpayers have several reliable methods for obtaining the necessary federal and state forms. These options range from digital downloads to physical copies.

Online Sources for Federal Forms

The most direct method for obtaining federal tax forms is through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website. The “Forms and Publications” page on IRS.gov allows users to search for any document by its specific number, such as Form 1040, or by the subject matter. This digital library contains forms for the current tax year as well as an extensive archive of prior-year documents, all available as free PDF downloads.

Many taxpayers acquire federal forms indirectly through tax preparation software. Programs like TurboTax or H&R Block integrate the necessary forms directly into their guided, question-and-answer process. As you input your financial information, the software automatically selects and populates the correct documents, such as Schedule C for business income or Form 8889 for Health Savings Account contributions.

In-Person and Mail Options

For individuals who prefer or require paper documents, the IRS provides a way to order forms and instructions by mail. You can place an order online through the IRS website, by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676), or by sending a written request to the IRS National Distribution Center. The forms are typically delivered within 10 days, offering a dependable option for those without reliable internet access or a printer.

Some IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) may have a limited supply of the most common federal forms. However, all TACs operate by appointment only, and availability at these centers is very limited.

While libraries and post offices are no longer primary distribution points, some may still offer a small quantity of the most common forms, like the 1040 and 1040-SR. It is best to call ahead to confirm availability. Taxpayers can also print any form they need at most libraries for a small fee.

How to Get State Tax Forms

State tax forms are entirely separate from federal ones and are not available from the IRS. Each state has its own taxing authority, often called the Department of Revenue or Franchise Tax Board, which is responsible for creating and distributing its own set of tax documents.

The most reliable way to find state-specific forms is by visiting the official website of your state’s tax agency. A simple internet search for your state’s name followed by “department of revenue” or “tax forms” will typically lead to the correct government page. From there, you can download and print the required documents, similar to the process on the IRS website. Some states also offer their own free online filing systems that provide the necessary forms as part of the e-filing process.
