Chime is a financial technology company offering mobile banking services designed to provide convenient ways to manage your money. This article will guide you through various methods for adding funds to your Chime account.
You can deposit cash into your Chime account at over 85,000 retail locations across the United States. Prominent partners include Walgreens, Walmart, 7-Eleven, and CVS.
When making a cash deposit, you will need your Chime Visa® Debit Card or the barcode found in your Chime mobile app.
Walgreens locations offer fee-free cash deposits. Other third-party retailers may charge a fee, up to $4.95 per transaction. Daily deposit limits are $1,000 per transaction, with a monthly limit of $10,000. Specific limits can vary by retailer.
To complete a cash deposit, approach the cashier at a participating retail location. You can either present your Chime card for them to swipe or access a barcode within the Chime app by navigating to “Move Money,” then “Deposit Cash,” and selecting “View barcode.” Once the cashier scans the barcode or swipes your card and accepts the cash, the funds are available in your Chime account within minutes. Retain your receipt as proof of the transaction.
Chime allows you to deposit checks using the mobile app’s check deposit feature. This service accepts most types of checks, including payroll, government, and personal checks. However, certain types like credit card checks or temporary checks are not accepted.
Before initiating the deposit, you must endorse the back of the check by signing your name and writing “For Chime Mobile Deposit Only” below your signature. Ensure the check is not altered, is legible, and that the name on the check matches the name on your Chime account. For optimal photo capture, place the endorsed check on a flat, dark surface in a well-lit area to avoid shadows and ensure all four corners are visible.
To deposit the check, open your Chime app and navigate to the “Move Money” section, then select “Mobile Check Deposit.” The app will guide you to take photos of the front and back of the endorsed check, review images, and confirm the deposit amount. Funds from mobile check deposits are generally available within one to five business days, though some may clear sooner or take up to a week depending on the check amount or Chime’s review process. Initial deposit limits are up to $2,000 per check, a daily limit of $2,000, and a monthly limit of $10,000, though these limits can vary based on individual account history and direct deposit activity.
You can also fund your Chime account through various digital transfer methods. To facilitate most electronic transfers, you will need your Chime account and routing numbers. These are located within the Chime app by going to the “Move Money” section and selecting “Set up direct deposit,” or by checking your monthly statements.
For direct deposits, such as payroll or government benefits, you will provide these Chime account and routing numbers to the payer. Chime also offers a pre-filled direct deposit form that can be emailed or printed for your employer or benefits provider. Chime makes direct deposit funds available as soon as the payer’s financial institution sends the payment information, often allowing access up to two days earlier than the scheduled payday. There is no limit to the amount you can receive via direct deposit.
Transferring funds from an external bank account to Chime can be done by linking the accounts. This involves using a third-party service like Plaid within the Chime app, or manually entering your external bank’s routing and account numbers, which may require micro-deposit verification. Once linked, you can initiate an Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfer, which takes one to three business days for funds to become available.
Additionally, Chime can be linked to peer-to-peer (P2P) payment applications, allowing transfers to your Chime account. Processing times vary from near-instant to a few business days depending on the specific P2P service. You can also instantly transfer money from a linked external debit card to your Chime account, though transfer limits apply based on your account history.
