Where Are My Amended Taxes? How to Check the Status

Demystify the waiting period for your amended tax return. Gain clarity on its progression, potential pauses, and the right time for further action.

An amended tax return, officially known as Form 1040-X, is a document filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to correct information on a previously submitted federal income tax return. Taxpayers file this form when they discover an error or omission. Common reasons include misreporting income, such as receiving a corrected Form W-2 or 1099, or overlooking eligible deductions and credits. For instance, an individual might amend their return to claim the Child Tax Credit or Dependent Care Credit they initially missed, or to adjust their filing status if it was incorrect. This process allows taxpayers to ensure their tax liability is accurate, potentially leading to a larger refund or a reduced amount owed.

Checking Your Amended Return Status Online

To check the status of your amended tax return, the IRS provides an online tool called “Where’s My Amended Return?” (WMAR). This tool can provide status updates for the current tax year and the three prior tax years.

To use the WMAR tool, navigate to the IRS website and locate the “Where’s My Amended Return?” section. Input your Social Security Number, date of birth, and ZIP code into the designated fields. The system will then display the status of your amended return. You may see three status messages: “Received,” indicating the IRS has received and is processing your return; “Adjusted,” meaning an adjustment has been made to your account; or “Completed,” signifying the IRS has finished its review. You can also check the status by calling the IRS automated telephone line.

Typical Processing Timelines

The IRS processes amended tax returns, Form 1040-X, in approximately 8 to 12 weeks. In some situations, processing time can extend up to 16 weeks.

The IRS suggests allowing at least three weeks from the submission date before checking the status using the WMAR tool. These processing times apply whether you file your amended return electronically or by mail.

Reasons for Delays

Several factors can lead to delays in processing an amended tax return. Errors on Form 1040-X, such as incorrect Social Security numbers or missing information, can significantly slow down the review process. An incomplete or unsigned amended return may also be sent back, causing an immediate delay.

Certain situations require additional scrutiny and can prolong processing times. For example, if your amended return includes Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, or if there are issues related to identity theft or fraud, the IRS may take more time for review. Returns routed to a specialized IRS unit, cleared by a bankruptcy area, or requiring review and approval by a revenue officer can also experience extended delays. High volume periods, such as immediately after the main tax filing deadline, can also contribute to longer processing times.

When to Contact the IRS

If your amended return has exceeded the typical processing timeframe, or if the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool indicates a need to contact the IRS, you can reach out for assistance. It is recommended to wait at least 16 weeks from the submission date before contacting the IRS regarding your amended return. The WMAR tool will direct you to contact them if necessary.

You can call the IRS amended return hotline at 866-464-2050 to inquire about your case. This automated telephone line is available in both English and Spanish. When you call, have a copy of your amended return, your Social Security Number, date of birth, and ZIP code ready to verify your identity and facilitate the conversation.
