When Does the Navy Get Paid? Pay Dates & Schedule

Learn the reliable pay schedule for Navy personnel. Understand how the system works for consistent financial planning and peace of mind.

Understanding how Navy personnel receive their pay is an important aspect of financial planning for service members and their families. The military pay system is designed to be regular and reliable, ensuring that individuals can effectively manage their finances. This consistent payment schedule helps Navy personnel budget for expenses, save for future goals, and maintain financial stability throughout their service.

The Standard Pay Schedule

Navy personnel typically receive their pay through a bi-monthly schedule. For active-duty members, pay is usually disbursed on the 1st and the 15th of each month. The mid-month payment, received around the 15th, covers the pay earned during the first half of the current month. The end-of-month payment, received on the 1st of the following month, covers the pay earned from the 16th through the last day of the previous month.

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) processes these payments, ensuring that service members receive their entitlements promptly. The pay received includes basic pay, which is the primary component, along with various allowances that may be tax-exempt. These allowances can include Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS), which contribute significantly to a service member’s overall compensation.

Impact of Weekends and Holidays

The standard pay dates of the 1st and 15th of the month are subject to adjustment when they coincide with non-business days. If either the 1st or the 15th falls on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday) or a federal holiday, the pay is typically disbursed on the preceding business day. For example, if a payday falls on a Saturday, funds would be released on the preceding Friday. This rule applies consistently across all branches of the military, including the Navy, to maintain a uniform pay schedule.

How to Access Pay Details

Navy personnel can access their detailed pay information and manage various aspects of their financial accounts through MyPay, an official online system operated by DFAS. This secure portal allows service members to view, print, and save their Leave and Earnings Statements (LES). An LES serves as the military equivalent of a pay stub, providing a comprehensive breakdown of earnings, deductions, and leave balances for a specific pay period.

Through MyPay, individuals can also update their direct deposit information, ensuring their pay is routed to the correct bank account. Additionally, the system facilitates the management of allotments, which are automatic deductions from pay for savings, insurance, or other financial obligations.
