What Payment Cards Does Afterpay Accept?

Maximize your Afterpay experience. Discover eligibility for various payment options and simplify how you manage your payment details.

Afterpay provides a flexible “buy now, pay later” service, allowing consumers to divide purchases into smaller, interest-free installments. This article clarifies the types of payment cards Afterpay accepts, those it does not, and how to manage payment methods.

Accepted Card Types

Afterpay primarily accepts major credit and debit cards issued within the user’s country of residence, including those from networks like Mastercard and Visa. Both card types can be linked to an Afterpay account for automatic payment deductions.

Afterpay also integrates with digital payment platforms like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Cash App Pay. These digital wallets often link to an underlying credit or debit card. Eligible users can also link their checking accounts directly for payment purposes, providing another convenient method for managing installments.

Unaccepted Card Types

Afterpay has limitations on the types of payment cards it accepts. Cards issued by foreign banks are not supported. This ensures transactions align with domestic financial regulations.

Prepaid cards and gift cards cannot be stored as a primary payment method. Some prepaid cards might be used for one-off manual payments, though they cannot be saved for recurring installments. Afterpay also does not accept cards issued by other “buy now, pay later” providers.

Adding and Managing Cards

Users can add new payment cards to their Afterpay account through either the mobile application or the website. Within the app, navigate to the “My Afterpay” tab, then select “Payment settings” under “Account settings,” and choose “Add payment method.” This process involves entering the card details and saving them to the account. A small, temporary authorization hold, typically $3 or less, may be placed on the card to verify its validity, which is not an actual charge.

Managing existing cards is straightforward. If a user needs to update the billing address for a card, the current card should be removed and then re-added with the correct information. To set a preferred card for future purchases or change the card linked to an active order, users can access “Payment settings” and select the desired card. A card cannot be removed if it has active orders associated with it; the linked card for those orders must be changed first before removal is possible.
