Continuing the example, if the company’s Gross Profit is $300,000 and its operating expenses amount to $80,000, the Operating Profit would be $220,000 ($300,000 – $80,000).
Net Profit is the final calculation, derived by subtracting interest expense and income taxes from the Operating Profit. Interest expense is the cost of borrowing money for business purposes. Income taxes are the tax liabilities a business incurs on its earnings. Following the example, if the Operating Profit is $220,000, and the company incurs $20,000 in interest expense and $40,000 in income tax, the Net Profit would be $160,000 ($220,000 – $20,000 – $40,000).
