Determining gold’s melt value depends on three primary pieces of information.
The first is the item’s precise weight, typically measured in troy ounces or grams. A troy ounce, approximately 31.1035 grams, differs from the more common avoirdupois ounce (about 28.35 grams).
The second component is the gold’s purity, often expressed in karats or as a fineness number. Karats indicate the proportion of pure gold out of 24 parts, with 24K signifying pure gold. Fineness represents purity in parts per thousand, where .999 fineness means 99.9% pure gold.
The third element is the current market price of gold, known as the “spot price.” This is the real-time price of one troy ounce of pure gold on global commodity markets. Spot prices fluctuate throughout the day based on supply, demand, economic conditions, and currency values.
Calculating gold’s melt value combines weight, purity, and spot price. The initial step is converting the item’s total weight into a standardized unit, such as troy ounces or grams. For instance, 20 grams converts to troy ounces by dividing by 31.1035 grams per troy ounce.
Next, ascertain the amount of pure gold by multiplying the total weight by its purity percentage. For example, an 18K gold item weighing 10 grams has 75% purity (18 divided by 24), yielding 7.5 grams of pure gold (10 grams 0.75). If the spot price is per troy ounce, ensure the pure gold content is also in troy ounces for consistency.
Finally, multiply the pure gold content by the current spot price per unit. If the pure gold content is 0.241 troy ounces (7.5 grams converted) and the spot price is $2,300 per troy ounce, the melt value would be $554.30 (0.241 troy ounces $2,300/troy ounce).
While gold’s melt value provides a theoretical intrinsic worth, the actual amount received when selling gold often differs. Buyers, such as refiners or dealers, incorporate various costs and profit margins into their offers. These deductions mean the “realized value” or “scrap value” is lower than the calculated melt value.
Refining costs are a factor, as buyers process and purify the gold. These costs can range from 0.5% to 10% or more of the gold’s value, depending on material purity and volume. Dealers also apply a premium or discount, known as the bid-ask spread, to cover operational expenses, testing, handling, and profit. This spread can vary, with dealers buying gold at 5% to 15% below the melt value.
Market conditions, including supply and demand, also influence offer competitiveness. Buyers may perform assaying or testing to verify gold’s purity, which can incur separate fees ranging from $10 to $300 per sample. These factors collectively contribute to the difference between an item’s melt value and the cash received.
