Net pay represents the money an employee actually receives after all subtractions from their total earnings. This amount, often called “take-home pay,” is what ultimately lands in a bank account or is received as a physical check. Gross pay is the total compensation an employee earns before any deductions are applied. This figure includes wages, salary, bonuses, and commissions. Net pay, in contrast, is the resulting amount after all mandatory and voluntary deductions are subtracted from this gross figure. Gross Pay minus Deductions equals Net Pay.

Additionally, Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes, comprising Social Security and Medicare, are mandatory. Social Security contributes to retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, with employees typically paying 6.2% of wages up to an annual limit, while Medicare helps fund healthcare for the elderly and disabled, with employees paying 1.45% of all wages, plus an additional 0.9% for high earners.
Voluntary deductions are those an employee chooses to have subtracted from their pay, often for benefits or savings. Health insurance premiums are common, covering an employee’s portion of medical, dental, or vision plans. Many employees also contribute to retirement plans such as a 401(k) or 403(b), which can be pre-tax or post-tax contributions. Other voluntary deductions might include premiums for life or disability insurance, contributions to Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) or Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), or even charitable donations. In some instances, court-ordered wage garnishments for debts like child support or unpaid loans are also deducted, representing a mandatory withholding in response to a legal directive.
