For example, if a company’s total annual indirect costs for labor (payroll taxes, benefits, training, etc.) amount to $50,000, and the total annual direct labor costs (gross wages) are $200,000, the indirect costs are then divided by the direct costs.

Using the example, the labor burden rate would be $50,000 / $200,000, resulting in a burden rate of 0.25. This means that for every dollar spent on direct wages, an additional $0.25 is incurred in indirect costs. If the base chosen was direct hours, say 10,000 hours, the burden rate would be $50,000 / 10,000 hours, yielding a rate of $5.00 per hour. This indicates that for every direct labor hour, an additional $5.00 in indirect costs is incurred.
