Federal income tax is one such deduction, withheld by employers and remitted to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). An additional Medicare tax of 0.9% applies to earnings above $200,000 for single filers, or $250,000 for those married filing jointly.
Voluntary deductions are those an employee chooses to have withheld from their pay. Common examples include health insurance premiums for medical, dental, or vision coverage, contributions to retirement plans such as a 401(k), life insurance premiums, union dues, or charitable contributions. Many of these voluntary deductions, like health savings accounts (HSAs) or flexible spending accounts (FSAs), are typically taken out on a pre-tax basis, which can reduce an individual’s taxable income.
