Gross wages represent the total compensation an employee earns from an employer before any deductions are subtracted. This is the top-line figure in an employment offer, whether expressed as an annual salary or an hourly rate. It serves as the foundational amount from which all payroll calculations, including taxes and other withholdings, are made.
An employee’s gross wages are the sum of all forms of compensation received during a pay period. The most common component is base pay, which for many is a fixed annual salary. For others, it consists of hourly wages, calculated by multiplying their pay rate by the number of hours worked.
Overtime pay is a frequent addition for non-exempt hourly employees. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), this is calculated at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate for hours worked beyond a 40-hour workweek. Other forms of compensation, such as commissions, tips, and performance-based bonuses, also contribute to the total gross wage.
While gross wages reflect total earnings, net pay is the amount an employee receives in their bank account, often called “take-home pay.” The difference is due to payroll deductions, which are subtracted from gross wages to arrive at net pay. These deductions are categorized as either mandatory or voluntary.
Mandatory deductions are required by law and include federal, state, and local income taxes. This category also includes FICA taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. The Social Security tax is 6.2% on wages up to an annual limit of $176,100, while the Medicare tax is 1.45% on all wages, with an additional 0.9% for higher earners.

The method for calculating gross wages depends on whether an employee is salaried or paid hourly. For a salaried employee, you divide their total annual salary by the number of pay periods in the year. For instance, an employee with an annual salary of $60,000 who is paid bi-weekly (26 times a year) has a gross wage of $2,307.69 for each pay period ($60,000 / 26).
For an hourly employee, the calculation is based on their pay rate and the hours worked. If an employee earns $20 per hour and works 80 hours in a bi-weekly pay period, their gross wage is $1,600 ($20 × 80 hours). If that same employee worked 5 hours of overtime, those hours would be paid at a premium and added to the gross wage total.
Gross wages are important beyond the immediate paycheck. Lenders and financial institutions use this number when assessing an individual’s capacity to repay debt. When applying for a mortgage, auto loan, or personal line of credit, your gross monthly income is a factor in determining how much you can borrow. Lenders use it to calculate your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio.
