Gross wage is the total compensation an employee earns from an employer before any deductions are withheld. This figure is the starting point for all payroll calculations and is the amount quoted in job offers and salary negotiations, such as an annual salary or hourly rate. Understanding gross wage is important for personal finance, as it forms the basis for taxes and other financial obligations.
The calculation of gross wages begins by totaling all forms of an employee’s compensation. The most straightforward component is base pay, which is either an agreed-upon hourly rate or a fixed annual salary. This amount is often supplemented by other types of earnings to determine the total gross figure.
One of the most common additions is overtime pay. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees are entitled to overtime pay for any hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. This is calculated at a rate of one and a half times their regular rate of pay. For example, an employee earning $20 per hour would receive $30 for each hour of overtime worked.
