Gross pay represents the total amount an employer pays an employee for work performed before any deductions or taxes are subtracted. It is the initial compensation, whether from salary, hourly wages, or commissions. Components include regular wages, overtime hours, bonuses, and tips. For instance, an annual salary of $60,000 is gross pay.
Net pay, often called “take-home pay,” is the amount an employee actually receives after all mandatory and voluntary deductions are subtracted from gross pay. This is the final sum deposited into a bank account or issued as a physical check. It reflects the true disposable income available to the individual. While gross pay indicates total earnings, net pay reveals the spendable income after all obligations are met.
Numerous deductions and withholdings commonly reduce gross pay to net pay. Federal income tax is a primary deduction, with the amount withheld based on information provided on an employee’s Form W-4, reflecting filing status and other income or adjustments. This progressive tax system means higher incomes face higher tax rates. Many states also impose state income taxes, which are withheld from earnings and vary significantly by location; some states do not levy an income tax. A few localities, such as cities or counties, may also implement their own local income taxes, which can be flat rates, progressive, or fixed amounts.
Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes are another mandatory deduction, funding Social Security and Medicare programs. For 2024, the Social Security tax is 6.2% of gross wages up to an annual wage base limit of $168,600, while Medicare tax is 1.45% of all gross wages with no income limit. For 2025, the Social Security wage base increases to $176,100. An additional Medicare tax of 0.9% applies to individual incomes exceeding $200,000, or $250,000 for married couples filing jointly. Beyond these statutory deductions, voluntary withholdings can include health insurance premiums, contributions to retirement plans such as a 401(k), and other benefits like life insurance or union dues.

Gross pay is the figure discussed during salary negotiations and used by lenders to assess loan eligibility, such as for mortgages or car loans. It represents the full earning capacity of an individual.
