This frequency differs from other common payroll schedules. Weekly payroll involves 52 paychecks annually. Semi-monthly payroll entails 24 paychecks per year, paid twice a month on specific dates. Monthly payroll results in 12 paychecks per year, paid once a month. The defining characteristic of bi-weekly pay is its consistent two-week interval, contrasting with semi-monthly’s fixed dates that can cause varying days between paychecks.

Calculating Bi-Weekly Pay

Calculating an employee’s gross bi-weekly pay differs for salaried versus hourly workers. For salaried employees, gross pay is calculated by dividing their annual salary by 26 pay periods. For example, an employee with an annual salary of $52,000 would receive $2,000 per bi-weekly paycheck ($52,000 ÷ 26). This calculation provides a consistent gross amount for each pay period.

Hourly employees’ bi-weekly pay is based on the actual hours they work within the 14-day pay period. Gross pay is determined by multiplying their hourly rate by the total hours worked during that two-week cycle. For instance, if an employee earns $20 per hour and works 80 hours over the two weeks, their gross bi-weekly pay would be $1,600 ($20 x 80 hours). Overtime hours, typically those exceeding 40 in a workweek, are calculated at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. After gross pay is determined, various deductions, such as federal, state, and local taxes, and benefit contributions are applied to arrive at the net pay.
