What Is an Issue Number on a Credit Card?

Demystify the credit card issue number. Learn about this specific card detail, its relevance in certain transactions, and what to do when it's absent.

Understanding the Issue Number

A credit card issue number is a specific identifier found on some credit cards, typically a unique digit or set of digits. It provides an additional detail beyond the primary account number or expiration date.

This number represents an internal tracking mechanism for the card issuer. It often indicates the version or iteration of a credit card issued to an account holder, helping the bank differentiate between multiple cards issued for the same account, such as replacements for lost or expired cards. It is distinct from the primary card number, the Card Verification Value (CVV), or the card’s expiration date, each serving different security or identification purposes.

Locating the Issue Number

To locate the issue number on a credit card, look for a small number, often a single digit, typically positioned on the front of the card. It might be found near the primary card number, the valid-through date, or sometimes beneath your name. Occasionally, it could be labeled with terms like “ISSUE NO.” or “ISS. NO.” Issue numbers are generally 1 or 2 digits long. While less common on cards issued within the United States, this feature is more prevalent on credit and debit cards from financial institutions in other regions, such as the United Kingdom and Ireland.

When an Issue Number is Requested

A credit card issue number is occasionally requested during online transactions or when filling out digital payment forms. This typically occurs with merchants or payment gateways that process transactions for a global customer base or those utilizing older card processing systems. It functions as an additional security or verification field, supplementing other details like the card number and expiration date. Although less commonly required than the CVV, providing this number can be a necessary step to complete certain online purchases, especially through international platforms.

Cards Without an Issue Number

Many credit card issuers, particularly in the United States, do not include an issue number on their cards, as the practice has become less common with new cards often coming with entirely new account numbers upon re-issuance. If an online form requests this detail and your card lacks one, you generally have a few options. Often, leaving the field blank will allow the transaction to proceed, or some systems may require you to enter a zero (0). If issues persist, contacting the merchant’s customer support for guidance is advisable to complete your purchase.
