Other post-tax deductions may include union dues, certain insurance premiums (such as after-tax life or disability insurance), charitable contributions made through payroll, and repayments of company loans or advances.

Post-Tax Versus Pre-Tax Deductions

The difference between post-tax and pre-tax deductions lies in their timing relative to tax calculations and their impact on taxable income. Pre-tax deductions are taken from an employee’s gross pay before taxes are calculated, thereby reducing the amount of income subject to taxation. This reduction in taxable income can lead to a lower tax liability for the employee.

Common examples of pre-tax deductions include contributions to traditional 401(k) plans, health insurance premiums, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) contributions, and Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions. In contrast, post-tax deductions do not reduce taxable income as they are withheld after taxes have been computed. Both types of deductions reduce an employee’s net pay, but pre-tax deductions offer an immediate tax benefit, while post-tax deductions do not.
