The plan’s specific benefit rules, such as early retirement factors or revaluation rates applied to deferred benefits, also play a substantial role in determining the final transfer value.
To obtain a pension transfer value, an individual typically requests it from their former employer’s pension plan administrator. The contact method can vary, but involves reaching out to human resources or the dedicated pension benefits office.
Once the request is submitted, the plan administrator gathers information to calculate the individual’s transfer value. This process involves reviewing the individual’s years of service, salary history, and the plan’s benefit formula. Upon completion, the administrator issues a pension benefit statement.

Once a pension transfer value statement is obtained and an individual decides to proceed, the funds are moved directly from the original pension scheme to a new, eligible retirement account, such as an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or another employer’s qualified plan. This direct rollover, also known as a trustee-to-trustee transfer, is the preferred method as it avoids immediate tax withholding and potential penalties.
The original plan administrator handles the transfer by sending funds directly to the custodian of the new retirement account. This process requires coordination between the individual, the original pension plan, and the receiving financial institution. Specific forms from both the relinquishing plan and the receiving account are necessary to facilitate the transfer, ensuring compliance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations.
