Other common voluntary deductions can include union dues, charitable contributions, or wage garnishments for debts like child support or unpaid taxes.

Calculating Your Net Pay

The calculation of net pay follows a straightforward formula: Gross Pay minus Total Deductions equals Net Pay. All mandatory and voluntary deductions are aggregated to arrive at a single total deduction figure.

For example, if an employee has a gross pay of $2,000 for a pay period, and their total deductions amount to $500, their net pay would be $1,500. This $500 could comprise various withholdings, such as $200 for federal income tax, $50 for state income tax, $153 for FICA taxes, $75 for health insurance, and $22 for a 401(k) contribution. Each of these specific deductions reduces the gross amount to arrive at the final net figure. The total deductions are subtracted from the gross pay to determine the exact amount deposited into an individual’s bank account or provided as a physical check.
