A gross paycheck represents the total earnings an employee accrues before any withholdings or deductions are applied. It is the foundational figure from which all subsequent calculations are made, serving as the initial measure of an individual’s compensation.
Gross pay encompasses various forms of compensation. For hourly employees, gross pay is calculated by multiplying their hourly rate by the number of regular hours worked, with additional consideration for overtime hours, which are often paid at a higher rate. Salaried employees, in contrast, receive a fixed amount per pay period, regardless of the exact hours worked.
Beyond regular wages or salaries, gross pay can also include other forms of remuneration. These might encompass commissions, which are earnings based on sales performance, or bonuses, which are additional payments often tied to individual or company achievements. Tips received by service industry workers and payments for accrued vacation or sick leave contribute to an employee’s total gross earnings.
