Sales allowances are reductions in the selling price granted to customers, often when they agree to keep a product that has a minor defect or issue instead of returning it. Sales discounts are price reductions offered to customers, typically to encourage early payment of invoices. These deductions are recorded in contra-revenue accounts, which directly offset the gross sales figure on the income statement.

Sales revenue differs from other forms of income, such as interest income from investments, dividend payouts, or gains from the sale of assets. These are considered non-operating revenues because they do not arise from the company’s core business activities of selling goods or services. While they contribute to a company’s total revenue, they are not included in the calculation of sales revenue.
