This final figure is what is deposited into a bank account or paid out via check, directly impacting an individual’s available funds for daily expenses and savings goals. Understanding net pay is fundamental for personal budgeting and effective financial planning. It is distinct from gross pay, which is the total amount earned before any reductions.
Gross pay is the total compensation an employee earns before any deductions are taken out. This amount typically includes an employee’s regular wages or salary for the hours worked or the agreed-upon pay period. Beyond base pay, gross earnings can also encompass additional forms of compensation. These may include overtime pay for hours worked beyond the standard workweek, commissions earned from sales, performance-based bonuses, or tips received directly from customers.
