Home equity loans typically have fixed terms, often ranging from 5 to 30 years, influencing monthly payments and total interest paid. A longer term generally results in lower monthly payments but accrues more total interest.

Various closing costs and fees are associated with obtaining a home equity loan, typically ranging from 2% to 5% of the total loan amount. These can include origination fees, appraisal fees, attorney fees, title search fees, and recording fees. For example, an appraisal fee might range from $600 to $2,000, while origination fees could be between 0.5% and 1% of the loan amount.

Borrowers should also inquire about prepayment penalties, which are fees charged if the loan is paid off earlier than scheduled. While not all loans include them, understanding their presence is important to avoid unexpected costs.
