What Day Are Disability Payments Made?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) oversees various benefit programs, each with its own specific payment schedule. Social Security Disability Insurance Payment Schedule

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are paid on a schedule determined by the beneficiary’s birth date, especially for those who began receiving benefits after May 1997. If a beneficiary’s birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, payment is scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month. Those with birthdays between the 11th and 20th receive payments on the third Wednesday of the month. For individuals whose birthday falls between the 21st and 31st, benefits are disbursed on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Beneficiaries who started receiving SSDI benefits before May 1997 have a different schedule, with payments generally arriving on the third day of each month, regardless of their birth date. If an individual receives both SSDI and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), their SSDI payment is on the third of the month, and their SSI payment is on the first.

Supplemental Security Income Payment Schedule

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are issued on the first day of each month. The SSI program provides financial assistance to individuals who are aged, blind, or disabled and have limited income and resources.

Adjustments for Weekends and Holidays

Payment dates for both SSDI and SSI benefits are adjusted if the scheduled day falls on a weekend or a federal holiday. Payments are made on the preceding business day. For instance, if the first of the month (for SSI) or a scheduled Wednesday (for SSDI) is a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the payment will be issued on the Friday before. Beneficiaries should be aware of the federal holiday calendar to anticipate these early payments.

Accessing and Verifying Payment Information

Beneficiaries can access and verify their payment information through several methods. Creating a “my Social Security” online account allows individuals to view their payment history, check application status, and obtain a benefit verification letter. While the online account provides current payment details, a complete historical record of past SSI payments may not be fully available, often showing information only back a few years.

The national toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213, connects beneficiaries with representatives. Visiting a local Social Security office can also provide in-person support. Most federal benefit payments, including Social Security and SSI, are required to be made electronically, either through direct deposit into a bank account or onto a Direct Express® Debit Mastercard®. The Direct Express card allows beneficiaries without a bank account to receive funds and make purchases or withdraw cash.
