Chime’s SpotMe is an optional, fee-free overdraft service. It helps eligible members cover everyday expenses when their account balance falls short, preventing transaction declines without incurring traditional overdraft fees.
SpotMe operates as an overdraft feature for eligible Chime checking account holders. To qualify, members must have an active Chime Checking Account and an activated Chime Visa Debit or Credit Builder Card. A primary requirement for eligibility is receiving at least one qualifying direct deposit of $200 or more into the Chime Checking Account within the preceding 34 days. The initial SpotMe limit typically starts at $20, increasing over time to $200 or higher.
The specific limit is determined by various factors, including the member’s account activity, their history with Chime, and the frequency and amount of direct deposits received. This feature is free, with no fees for its use or repayment. Chime automatically assesses eligibility and adjusts the SpotMe limit based on these ongoing account behaviors.
SpotMe covers certain transactions when the account balance is insufficient, preventing declines. It applies to everyday debit card purchases made with the Chime Visa Debit Card. This includes common transactions such as buying groceries, purchasing gas, making online purchases, and paying bills directly with the debit card.
The feature also covers cash withdrawals from ATMs, cash-back transactions at retail locations, and over-the-counter withdrawals. When a transaction would cause the account balance to go negative, the SpotMe amount is automatically applied to cover the shortfall, up to the available limit. This automatic application ensures that eligible transactions are completed without interruption or additional fees.
While SpotMe covers many common transactions, it does not extend to all financial activities. SpotMe does not cover Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfers, which include direct debits set up for automatic bill payments from the Chime Checking Account. This means that recurring payments for utilities, subscriptions, or loan payments configured as ACH pulls are not eligible for SpotMe coverage.
Additionally, transfers made using Chime’s “Pay Anyone” feature are not covered by SpotMe. Transfers to external third-party applications, such as Venmo or Cash App, also fall outside the scope of SpotMe coverage. Payments initiated through Chime Checkbook transactions are similarly excluded from SpotMe protection.
The SpotMe limit is dynamic, increasing or decreasing based on a member’s financial activity and history with Chime. Factors influencing this adjustment include the consistency and amount of direct deposits, overall spending habits, and prior repayment behavior. Chime’s system automatically reviews these elements and notifies members of any changes to their available limit.
Repayment for any SpotMe advance is automatic. The overdrawn amount is automatically applied from the next direct deposit or any incoming funds into the Chime Checking Account. Additionally, Chime offers a “SpotMe Boost” feature, allowing members to temporarily increase another member’s SpotMe limit by $5. Members typically receive four Boosts at the beginning of each month to send to others, and they can also receive up to four Boosts themselves, which expire at the end of the month.
