What Can a Cash App Sponsor Actually Do?

Understand the comprehensive role of a Cash App sponsor. Learn about their permissions, responsibilities, and how to manage a minor's account.

Cash App has emerged as a widely adopted peer-to-peer payment service, facilitating digital transactions for millions of users. While its primary function involves sending and receiving money, the platform includes a distinct feature tailored for users under the age of 18. This particular functionality introduces the concept of a “sponsor,” an adult who provides oversight for a minor’s account. This article details the sponsor’s role, capabilities, and account management process.

Understanding Cash App Sponsorship

Cash App sponsorship is a feature designed to allow individuals aged 13 to 17 to establish and utilize a Cash App account under adult supervision. A sponsor must be a parent or legal guardian, at least 18 years old, and possess their own verified Cash App account. This arrangement aims to provide minors with controlled access to financial tools, fostering early financial literacy and management skills.

The fundamental purpose of this sponsorship is to create a secure environment where minors can engage with digital finances responsibly. The sponsor assumes legal ownership of the account, while the minor acts as an authorized user. This structure places the legal responsibility for all account activity directly on the sponsoring adult.

Sponsor Responsibilities and Permissions

A Cash App sponsor has significant oversight and control over the minor’s account. Sponsors initially approve the creation of the minor’s account and the issuance of an associated Cash Card.

Sponsors can actively monitor the minor’s financial activities, including all sending, receiving, and Cash Card purchase transactions. This oversight extends to viewing transaction history in real-time or through monthly statements. Additionally, sponsors can set specific spending limits for the minor’s Cash Card, which may apply daily, weekly, or on a per-transaction basis.

Beyond transaction monitoring, sponsors can enable or disable various features for the minor’s account. This includes controlling access to functionalities such as direct deposit, Cash App Boosts, and even more advanced features like Bitcoin and stock investing. The sponsor can also lock or unlock the minor’s Cash Card as needed. A sponsor can also initiate the closure of the minor’s account by contacting Cash App support. Sponsors also receive real-time notifications regarding the minor’s account activity.

Setting Up a Sponsored Account

Establishing a sponsored Cash App account involves a structured process initiated by the minor and completed by the sponsor. The minor first downloads the Cash App and attempts to register, at which point they will be prompted to seek parental or guardian approval. This step requires the minor to provide their full name, date of birth, phone number, and email address.

Upon the minor’s request, the prospective sponsor receives a notification within their own Cash App interface. The sponsor then proceeds with their identity verification, providing their full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, and physical address. Once identity verification is complete, the sponsor reviews and agrees to the terms and conditions specifically applicable to sponsored accounts.

Managing a Sponsored Account

Once a sponsored account is established, the sponsor can manage it directly through their own Cash App application. The sponsor accesses a dedicated “Family” section, usually found within the Money tab of their profile. This section serves as a central dashboard for all linked sponsored accounts.

From this management interface, sponsors can navigate to view detailed transaction histories. They can also adjust previously set spending limits. Furthermore, the sponsor can toggle the availability of specific features, such as direct deposit or investment capabilities, and can lock or unlock the minor’s Cash Card. These ongoing management actions are seamlessly integrated into the sponsor’s primary Cash App profile.
