Net pay is calculated by subtracting total deductions from gross pay. For example, if gross pay is $1,000 and total deductions are $250, net pay would be $750. This final amount highlights the impact of various withholdings.

Common Deductions and Withholdings

The difference between gross and net pay comes from various deductions and withholdings, both mandatory and voluntary. Mandatory deductions ensure compliance with federal and, where applicable, state and local tax laws. These include federal income tax, withheld based on an employee’s W-4 form.

Many employees also opt for voluntary withholdings that contribute to their financial well-being. Common examples include premiums for health, dental, and vision insurance plans, which are deducted to cover healthcare costs. Contributions to retirement savings plans, such as a 401(k), are another popular voluntary deduction. Other voluntary deductions might include flexible spending accounts (FSAs), health savings accounts (HSAs), or union dues.

A paystub serves as a detailed record of an employee’s earnings and deductions for a specific pay period. Understanding how to read this document is essential for verifying compensation and tracking financial contributions. It clearly displays both the gross pay and the net pay for the current period.
