The primary intent of the expense must be for medical care, rather than for general health improvement or wellness.
Common examples of qualified medical expenses include insurance copayments, deductibles, prescription drugs, and certain medical devices. Over-the-counter medications and menstrual care products became eligible without a prescription as of January 1, 2020.
Acupuncture is generally recognized as an eligible expense for reimbursement through a Flexible Spending Account. For instance, it is frequently used for pain relief and has shown efficacy in treating conditions such as nausea, vomiting, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis.
Acupuncture treatments solely for general health maintenance, stress reduction without a diagnosed condition, or cosmetic purposes typically do not qualify for FSA reimbursement. To ensure eligibility, particularly for treatments that might be questioned, some FSA administrators may require a Letter of Medical Necessity (LOMN). This letter serves as documentation from a licensed healthcare provider confirming that the treatment is medically necessary for a diagnosed condition.
Specific documentation is required to substantiate an acupuncture claim for FSA reimbursement. A detailed receipt from the acupuncture provider is essential. This receipt should clearly include the date the service was rendered, a description of the service received, the total amount charged, and the name of the provider.
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LOMN) may be required by your FSA administrator. This letter, typically from a physician, must outline the specific medical condition being treated, provide a description of the recommended treatment including frequency and duration, and explain how the acupuncture will alleviate the condition. An LOMN is usually valid for one year and may need to be renewed annually for ongoing treatment.
After securing all necessary documentation, including receipts and a potential Letter of Medical Necessity, you can begin the claim submission process. Most FSA administrators offer multiple convenient methods for submitting claims, including online portals, mobile applications, mail, or fax. The online method generally involves logging into your FSA account, navigating to the claims section, and uploading digital copies of your supporting documents.
For those opting for mail or fax, a claim form typically needs to be downloaded, completed, and signed before being sent along with copies of your receipts and any other required documentation. After submission, claims are generally processed within a few business days, often ranging from one to five business days. Reimbursement is typically issued via direct deposit to a linked bank account.
