For personal services like a haircut or a spa treatment, where the total cost can be substantial, a $5 tip would likely not meet the customary 15-20% expectation.

How to Determine a Fair Tip

Tipping on the amount before sales tax ensures you are not paying gratuity on funds that go directly to the government. While some point-of-sale systems may calculate suggested tips on the post-tax amount, tipping on the subtotal before tax is the customary practice.

For situations outside of traditional sit-down meals, such as valet services, coat checks, or quick take-out orders, flat tips are often more common. For instance, a $1-$3 tip per bag for hotel porters or a $1 per drink at a bar are customary. Even in these cases, the amount should reflect the perceived value and effort of the service.

Always consider the quality of service you received. While 15-20% is a general guideline, exceptional service might warrant a higher tip, potentially 20% or more. If service was unsatisfactory, providing a lower percentage within the accepted range, or speaking with management, can communicate your experience without completely neglecting the service professional’s income reliance on tips.
