Mobile check deposit offers a convenient method for depositing checks without visiting a physical bank branch or ATM. This service allows individuals to use their smartphone to photograph a check and submit it directly to their bank. This guide outlines the necessary steps to properly prepare a check for mobile deposit and successfully submit it through a mobile banking application.
Before initiating a mobile deposit, ensure the physical check is correctly completed by the payer. Verify that the current date is present, your name (as the payee) is accurately written, the numerical and written amounts match, and the payer’s signature is included. Any discrepancies in these details can lead to processing delays or rejection.
Proper endorsement on the back of the check is a crucial step for mobile deposits. Locate the designated endorsement area, typically at the top of the back of the check. Write “For Mobile Deposit Only” clearly below your signature. This specific wording is often required by banking regulations to prevent the check from being deposited again. Ensure all written information, including your signature, is legible and matches the name on your account; avoid writing outside the designated endorsement area or making uninitialed corrections, as these can cause the deposit to be rejected.
Once the check is properly endorsed, open your bank’s mobile banking application and log in. Navigate to the mobile deposit feature. The app will guide you to capture images of both the front and back of the endorsed check.
For optimal image quality, place the check on a flat, dark, and contrasting surface in a well-lit area, free from shadows or glare. Ensure all four corners of the check are visible within the camera frame. After capturing the images, the app will prompt you to enter the check amount and select the account for deposit. Review all entered details and captured images for accuracy before submitting. Upon successful submission, you will typically receive an on-screen confirmation message.
After submitting your check, the deposit will typically be pending while your bank processes it. Funds from mobile deposits usually become available within one to two business days. This timeframe can vary based on the check amount, your bank’s policies, and the time of deposit. Some banks may make a portion of the funds available sooner, with the remainder clearing within a few business days.
Monitor your mobile banking app for status updates and retain any digital receipts or confirmation numbers. After the deposit is confirmed and the funds are fully available in your account, it is recommended to write “Mobile Deposited” and the date on the front of the physical check. Keep the endorsed check in a secure location for a period, generally 7 to 30 days, in case your bank requires it for verification or if any issues arise. After this retention period, securely shred the check to protect your financial information.
