How to Write a Check for 800 Dollars

Learn how to accurately fill out a personal check, ensuring secure and correct financial transactions every time.

A personal check functions as a traditional paper instruction to a bank, directing it to transfer a specific amount of money from one account to another. While digital payment methods are common today, checks remain a relevant tool for various transactions, including bill payments, transfers to individuals, or purchases of goods and services. Understanding how to accurately complete a check ensures a smooth and secure financial transaction.

Key Parts of a Check

A standard check contains several distinct areas that require specific information to process a payment. At the top right, a designated line is for the current date; below this, the “Pay to the Order of” line is where the name of the person or organization receiving the payment is entered. To the right of the payee line, a small box allows for the numerical representation of the payment amount. A longer line below the payee line is reserved for writing out the same payment amount in words, preventing alteration. Near the bottom left, an optional “Memo” or “For” line can be used to note the purpose of the payment, such as “rent” or an invoice number; finally, the signature line, usually in the bottom right, requires the account holder’s signature.

Filling Out the Check

Begin by writing the current date on the date line. Next, on the “Pay to the Order of” line, print the full name of the person or entity you intend to pay. In the small box to the right, write the numerical amount of “800.00,” ensuring the numbers fill the space to prevent additions. On the long line below the payee’s name, spell out the amount in words: “Eight Hundred and 00/100 Dollars.” It is important to write this amount as far to the left as possible and draw a line from the end of the written amount to the “Dollars” pre-printed on the check, filling any remaining blank space. This practice helps prevent unauthorized alterations. You can then use the memo line to briefly describe the payment, such as “Car Repair” or “Gift.” The final step is to sign your name on the signature line.

Important Considerations After Writing

After completing the check, double-check all fields for accuracy, including the date, the payee’s name, and both the numerical and written amounts. Always use a pen, preferably blue or black ink, as pencil marks can be easily altered. Maintaining a record of the check in a check register or personal ledger, noting the check number, date, payee, and amount. This helps track expenses and reconcile your bank account. Keep the check secure until delivered to the payee to prevent loss or unauthorized access.
