Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is a system used nationwide to deliver government assistance benefits to eligible individuals and families. These benefits are loaded onto a plastic card, functioning similarly to a debit card.
EBT cards commonly carry two types of benefits: food assistance (SNAP) and cash benefits. SNAP benefits are exclusively for purchasing eligible food items and cannot be converted to cash. Cash benefits, often from programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), provide financial aid for broader needs such as non-food items, rent, utilities, or transportation. These funds are electronically loaded onto the EBT card for direct use or withdrawal.
To withdraw cash benefits, locate an ATM that accepts EBT cards. Many ATMs display network logos like Quest, Plus, or Cirrus, indicating compatibility. The Quest logo signifies the ATM is part of the EBT network and processes cash withdrawals. State EBT programs often provide online ATM locators to help cardholders find surcharge-free machines. Look for signage on or near the ATM explicitly stating EBT acceptance.
Once you find an EBT-compatible ATM, the withdrawal process is similar to using a debit card. Insert your EBT card into the machine. Enter your four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) on the keypad. After your PIN is accepted, select “cash withdrawal” from the menu, or “checking” if prompted to choose an account type.
Enter the specific amount of cash you wish to withdraw, typically in whole dollar amounts. The ATM screen may display any applicable fees before you finalize the transaction. Confirm the withdrawal amount, and the ATM will dispense your cash along with a transaction receipt. Keep your receipt as it provides a record of your transaction and remaining balance.
Be aware of potential fees and withdrawal limits when using EBT cash benefits at an ATM. While many EBT transactions at network-affiliated ATMs (especially those with the Quest logo) may be fee-free for a certain number of withdrawals, some ATMs may impose a surcharge, typically ranging from $1.00 to $4.00 per transaction. Many states allow a limited number of free ATM withdrawals each month, after which a small transaction fee may be deducted. States also set daily or monthly withdrawal limits for cash benefits. Consult your state’s EBT program customer service or website for precise details.
