Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards are used to deliver government assistance, such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) cash benefits. These cards function similarly to debit cards, allowing recipients to access their allocated funds for eligible purchases. The increasing availability of EBT card use at self-checkout stations offers a convenient way to purchase groceries and other approved items. This article guides you through using an EBT card at self-checkout.
Before heading to the self-checkout, verify your EBT balance. You can typically check your balance by calling the customer service number located on the back of your EBT card, reviewing your last transaction receipt, or by accessing an online cardholder portal or mobile application if provided by your state. Knowing your balance for both SNAP food benefits and any cash benefits helps ensure a smooth transaction.
Remember your Personal Identification Number (PIN), as it is required to authorize all EBT transactions. Without the correct PIN, you will not be able to complete your purchase at the self-checkout. If you forget your PIN, you can usually reset it by calling the EBT customer service number or through your state’s online EBT portal.
Be aware of which items are eligible for purchase with EBT food benefits. SNAP benefits cover most staple food items, including fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, fish, dairy products, breads, cereals, and even seeds and plants that produce food for household consumption. However, EBT food benefits cannot be used to buy non-food items like pet food, soaps, paper products, household supplies, grooming items, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vitamins, or hot prepared foods for immediate consumption. It is helpful to separate eligible and ineligible items in your cart and have an alternative payment method ready for any ineligible purchases.
Initiating your transaction at a self-checkout station typically begins by selecting the “Start” or “Begin” option on the screen. Once the transaction has started, you will proceed to scan all of your items, including both those eligible for EBT food benefits and any ineligible items you intend to purchase. The system will track all scanned items before you select your payment method.
After scanning all groceries, the self-checkout machine will prompt you to choose a payment method. Look for options labeled “EBT,” “SNAP,” or “Food Stamps” on the screen. Selecting this option indicates you will use your EBT card.
You will then be instructed to swipe or insert your EBT card into the card reader. Following this, the machine will prompt you to enter your four-digit PIN on the keypad. This PIN entry serves as a security measure to confirm your identity and authorize the use of your benefits.
If your purchase includes both EBT-eligible and ineligible items, the system first processes the EBT-eligible portion. EBT funds are deducted for these items, and then the machine prompts you for an additional payment method for any remaining ineligible items. You can then use a debit card, credit card, or cash to cover the remaining balance. Once all payments are complete, confirm the transaction and take your receipt.
You might encounter issues using your EBT card at self-checkout. If the card reader does not seem to recognize your card, try re-swiping or re-inserting it, ensuring the card is oriented correctly. Also, inspect your card for any visible damage that might prevent it from being read.
An incorrect PIN entry can stop a transaction. If you enter your PIN incorrectly, the system will usually allow you to re-enter it. However, repeated incorrect entries might temporarily lock your card for security purposes, requiring you to contact EBT customer service for assistance.
If you have insufficient EBT funds for eligible items, the transaction will not complete. The machine will display a message indicating insufficient funds. You will need to either remove items or use another payment method to cover the cost of EBT-eligible items. It is not possible to process a partial EBT payment for a single item if the benefits do not cover its full cost.
If the self-checkout machine malfunctions, displays an unresolvable error, or you need assistance, use the “Call Attendant” button. A store employee can assist with troubleshooting, manually complete your transaction, or guide you to another lane. After any transaction, review your receipt to ensure correct processing and deductions.
