Genuine gold exhibits a distinctive, rich, warm yellow color with a bright, reflective luster, and it does not tarnish or corrode. These professionals employ sophisticated methods that go beyond what is feasible for home testing.

Common professional techniques include X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, which is non-destructive and quickly determines the elemental composition of the bar’s surface by analyzing the X-rays emitted from the metal. For the highest level of accuracy, a fire assay may be performed; however, this method is destructive as it involves melting a small sample of the gold. Choosing a professional service involves considering their accuracy, turnaround time, and whether they provide a certified report of the assay results.
