How to Pay Your California State Taxes Online

Understand the official process for paying California state taxes online, from preparing your information to ensuring your payment is securely submitted and verified.

The state’s Franchise Tax Board (FTB) provides secure and direct methods for handling tax obligations electronically. These systems are designed to process payments for various tax situations, including annual returns, estimated taxes, and responses to official notices. Utilizing these online tools allows for immediate confirmation and efficient processing of your state tax payments.

Information Required for Online Payment

You will need the Social Security Number (SSN) of the primary taxpayer, which is the individual listed first on the tax return. For those without an SSN, an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is used. The exact tax year for which the payment is being made must be identified, along with the corresponding tax form number, such as Form 540 for personal income tax returns.

The specific amount you intend to pay is also required, which could be the balance due on a return, an estimated tax payment, or the amount specified on a bill. Your mailing address as it appears on your most recent tax return must be entered for verification. If you are making a payment in response to a notice or bill from the FTB, you will need the notice number, which is typically located in the top right corner of the document.

For a direct payment from your bank account, you must provide your bank’s routing number and your specific account number. These numbers are found at the bottom of a check or through your online banking portal. If you choose to pay with a credit or debit card, you will need the card number, the expiration date, and the three or four-digit security code, often labeled as the CVV.

Step-by-Step Guide to California Online Tax Payments

Using FTB Web Pay (Bank Account)

The most direct and fee-free method for paying California state taxes online is through the FTB’s Web Pay system. To begin, navigate to the FTB’s payment website and select the option to pay with a bank account. You will be prompted to choose whether you are paying for a personal or business tax liability. For personal payments, you will need to enter the primary taxpayer’s SSN and last name to log in as a guest.

Once you have accessed the system, you must select the type of payment you are making, such as for a tax return, an amended return, or estimated taxes (Form 540-ES). Before finalizing, a summary screen will appear to review all entered information for accuracy before you submit the transaction.

Using a Credit or Debit Card (Third-Party Service)

California allows tax payments via credit or debit card through an authorized third-party payment processor. This service comes with a processing fee, which is typically a percentage of the payment amount for credit cards or a flat fee for debit cards. To use this option, you will select “credit card” on the FTB’s payment page, which will redirect you to the processor’s website, such as ACI Payments, Inc.

On the third-party site, you will confirm that you are making a payment to the State of California Franchise Tax Board and select the appropriate tax payment type. The final screen will display a detailed summary of the transaction, including the tax payment amount and the separate service fee. You must agree to this total amount to complete the payment.

Post-Payment Confirmation and Verification

After submitting your online payment, you will receive an immediate confirmation number. It is important to save this number for your records. You should print the confirmation page, take a screenshot, or save it as a PDF document as proof of payment.

The next step is to verify that the funds have been withdrawn from your account. Within a few business days of your scheduled payment date, check your bank or credit card statement. The transaction should appear as a debit from the FTB or the third-party processor.

Taxpayers with a MyFTB account can perform an additional verification. After allowing several business days for processing, log in to your MyFTB account. You can view your payment history to confirm the payment has been received and credited to your state tax account.
