Zip is a financial service that enables consumers to make purchases and pay for them over time. This “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) model divides the total cost into smaller, manageable installments. The service offers flexibility for both online and in-store transactions, providing an alternative to paying the full amount immediately.
To use Zip in-store, download the Zip mobile application (iOS/Android). After installation, create or log into your Zip account, providing personal details like name, address, date of birth, and a U.S. mobile number.
A valid payment method must be linked to the Zip account. This can include a debit or credit card. Confirm the billing zip code for the linked card matches your bank’s records. Debit or credit cards are generally used for in-store purchases.
The Zip app generates a virtual Visa card for in-store payments. Add this virtual card to a digital wallet (e.g., Apple Pay or Google Pay) for tap-to-pay at compatible terminals. Identify participating retailers through the Zip app’s store directory or by looking for Zip payment options at checkout.
To make an in-store purchase, open the Zip application on your mobile device. From the app’s homepage, select an “in-store” or “Pay in Store” option. Input the total purchase amount, including any taxes or potential shipping costs, into the app. This step determines the funds loaded onto the one-time Zip Virtual Visa Card for that transaction.
Upon entering the precise amount, the app immediately displays a detailed repayment plan, clearly outlining the installment breakdown over a set period. After carefully reviewing and agreeing to the presented terms and conditions, the unique virtual card details are promptly generated directly within the application. Depending on the specific point-of-sale system utilized by the retailer, the customer will then present either the virtual card number for manual entry, a dynamic QR code, or a scannable barcode to the cashier.
For transactions requiring virtual card input, the card details, including the number, expiration date, and CVV, can be verbally provided or entered directly into the store’s payment terminal. Alternatively, if the virtual card has been added to a digital wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, users can simply tap their device at compatible terminals for a contactless payment experience. In cases where a QR code or barcode is generated, the cashier scans it directly from the customer’s mobile phone screen to authorize the payment. A successful transaction is typically confirmed within the Zip app, and each purchase is reviewed for approval.
After an in-store purchase with Zip, the payment plan typically involves splitting the total cost into four installments due every two weeks. The first installment is generally due at the time of purchase, with the remaining payments automatically deducted from the linked debit or credit card. Some plans may offer eight installments, also due bi-weekly, depending on the purchase details.
Users can manage their payment schedule and review transaction history within the Zip mobile application. The app provides an overview of upcoming payments, allowing individuals to track due dates and amounts. Reminders are often sent via SMS and email a few days before each payment is due to help customers stay on track.
While payments are automatically debited, users retain the flexibility to make manual payments before or on the due date. The app also allows for updating or changing the linked payment method for ongoing plans, ensuring continuous service. This can be done by accessing the ‘Account’ and ‘Payment methods’ sections within the app.
