To send money, you will need the recipient’s full name or the exact business name, depending on who you are paying. You will also need the precise payment amount. Most importantly, obtain the recipient’s bank account number and their bank’s routing number.

A bank account number is a unique identifier for a specific account at a financial institution, typically ranging from eight to twelve digits. The routing number, a nine-digit code, identifies the specific financial institution and its branch. This number ensures the electronic transfer is directed to the correct bank. Understanding Payment Confirmation and Timing

After submitting your ACH payment, you will typically receive a confirmation message or email from your bank, acknowledging the initiation of the transfer. This confirmation serves as a record that your payment request has been received and is being processed. However, this initial confirmation does not mean the funds have immediately arrived in the recipient’s account.

ACH payments are processed in batches rather than in real-time, meaning they are not instantaneous. Generally, these transfers take about one to three business days to complete. Weekends and federal holidays are not considered business days, so initiating a payment on a Friday or before a holiday weekend will extend the processing time.

Factors like the time of day the payment is initiated can also influence the speed, as payments initiated earlier in the day may be processed sooner. You can usually monitor the status of your pending or completed ACH payments within your online banking portal.
