Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards are a tool for accessing various government benefits, functioning much like a debit card. Protecting these benefits from unauthorized use is important for cardholders. Many EBT systems now offer mobile app features, including the ability to lock your card, providing security against theft and fraud. This feature helps safeguard your funds.
To secure your EBT card, access the official mobile application. Most EBT programs are managed by state agencies or their contracted third-party providers, such as ConnectEBT or ebtEDGE. You can find the correct app by searching for “EBT” along with your state’s name in your device’s app store. Download only the official app to protect your personal information.
Once the app is installed, log in using your existing EBT account credentials. New users will be guided through a registration process, which involves providing your EBT card number, personal identification information, and creating a user ID and password. This initial setup ensures secure access to your benefit information and card management features. Some apps may also offer multi-factor authentication for added security during login.
After logging into your EBT mobile app, locating the card-locking feature is straightforward. Most applications feature a “Lock/Unlock Card” or “Freeze Card” option directly on the home screen or within a “Card Management” section. Tapping this icon will present you with an option to lock your card, with a confirmation prompt.
You might be asked to select the scope of the lock, such as “Lock My Card Everywhere” to deny all transactions, or options to block transactions only outside your state or online. Confirming your selection will activate the lock, and the app will provide immediate visual confirmation, by changing the icon from an open lock to a closed one. Some apps may also send an email confirmation of the action, providing a record of when the card was locked.
When your EBT card is locked, all purchase attempts, balance inquiries, and other transactions will be declined. This protective measure prevents unauthorized use of your benefits. The card remains locked until you manually unlock it through the app.
To unlock your card when you are ready to make a purchase, navigate back to the “Lock/Unlock Card” feature within the app and select the “Unlock My Card” option. Similar to locking, the app will provide visual confirmation of the card’s unlocked status. Many apps also offer an “auto-relock” feature, which automatically relocks your card after a set period, such as 30, 60, or 90 minutes, providing continuous protection.
