PayPal requires account verification to comply with regulatory mandates such as Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations. These regulations are designed to prevent illicit financial activities like fraud and money laundering. Verification also enhances the security of user accounts and transactions, safeguarding both PayPal and its customers. Similarly, linking a credit or debit card involves navigating to the “Wallet” section and selecting the option to link a card. You will enter your card details, including the card number, expiration date, and the security code (CVC). To confirm the card belongs to you, PayPal places a small authorization charge on your card, often $1.95. This charge, along with a unique four-digit code, will appear on your card statement within two to three business days. You then enter this four-digit code into your PayPal account to confirm the card, and PayPal refunds the charge to your card within 30 days.

Confirming Your Identity

Confirming your identity is another important part of the PayPal verification process. This step involves uploading government-issued identification documents. Acceptable forms of ID include a driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued photo ID. When uploading these documents, ensure they are legible, show all four corners, and match the information registered on your PayPal account, including your full name, date of birth, and document ID number.

In addition to a government-issued ID, you may be required to provide your Social Security Number (SSN). PayPal requests your SSN to verify your identity and comply with tax reporting regulations, especially if you engage in higher-value transactions or operate a business account. You might also be asked to provide proof of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement issued within the last 12 months. Finalizing Verification and Checking Status

After completing all the necessary steps, including linking financial accounts and confirming your identity, PayPal begins its review process. The processing time for review ranges from one to three business days. However, if additional information is required or if there are other complexities, the process may take longer, sometimes up to a week.

You can check the status of your verification within your PayPal account, in the “Summary” or “Account Settings” section. A green checkmark or “Verified” status indicates your account is complete.
