How to Get Your Dasher 1099 Tax Form

Learn how DoorDash independent contractors can easily access and understand their essential 1099 tax forms for accurate tax reporting.

Independent contractors, such as DoorDash Dashers, receive specific tax forms known as 1099s to report their income. These forms are used for filing federal and state income taxes. As independent contractors, DoorDash does not withhold taxes from Dasher earnings. Instead, 1099 forms serve as an official record of gross income, which Dashers report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Understanding Dasher 1099s

Dashers may receive different types of 1099 forms depending on their earnings and transaction volume. The primary forms are the 1099-NEC and the 1099-K.

The Form 1099-NEC reports income earned directly from DoorDash for services. This includes earnings from deliveries, incentive payments, and referral bonuses. Dashers typically receive a 1099-NEC if their gross earnings from DoorDash total $600 or more in a calendar year.

The Form 1099-K reports gross payments processed through a third-party network, such as Stripe. For the 2024 tax year, the IRS lowered the 1099-K reporting threshold to $5,000 in gross payments, with no transaction minimum.

Dashers may receive one, both, or neither form, depending on whether they meet the reporting thresholds. Both the 1099-NEC and 1099-K report gross income. These forms do not account for business expenses like mileage or vehicle maintenance, which are deductible.

Accessing Your 1099 Forms

DoorDash partners with a third-party platform, Stripe Express, to facilitate the secure delivery of 1099 tax forms to Dashers. Dashers who meet the earning thresholds will typically receive an email invitation from Stripe, often starting in October, with instructions to set up or log into their Stripe Express account.

To access the forms, Dashers log into their Stripe Express account using the email address associated with their Dasher profile. If it is a first-time login, a verification process, which may involve a phone number or email, helps confirm identity. Once logged in, Dashers can navigate to the “Tax Forms” section on the dashboard to view, download, or print their 1099-NEC and/or 1099-K forms. These forms are available by January 31st of the following calendar year for those who opted for paperless delivery.

For Dashers who have not opted for paperless delivery through Stripe Express, or in cases where digital access is problematic, a physical paper copy of the 1099 form will be mailed. These mailed copies are typically dispatched by January 31st, though delivery can take up to 10 business days. If forms are not received by early February, or if there are issues accessing them digitally, Dashers can seek assistance through DoorDash support or the Stripe Express support channels. Additionally, after January 31st, eligible Dashers may be able to view, save, or print a PDF report of their 1099 from the Earnings tab within the Dasher app.

Information on Your 1099

The 1099 forms received by Dashers contain details for tax preparation. Each form includes the taxpayer’s information, including the Dasher’s name, address, and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).

The forms also provide the payer’s information, which includes the name, address, and TIN of DoorDash or its payment processor, Stripe. This section identifies the entity responsible for issuing the payment. The income reporting sections detail the gross earnings for the tax year.

For the 1099-NEC, Box 1, labeled “Nonemployee compensation,” shows the total amount of earnings paid directly to the Dasher. This figure represents the sum of all payments for services, including base pay, tips, and any bonuses or incentive payments received. For the 1099-K, Box 1a, designated “Gross amount of payment card/third-party network transactions,” reports the total gross sales volume processed through the payment network. This amount typically includes the subtotal of orders plus any taxes, before any deductions for DoorDash commissions or fees are applied. Dashers should carefully review all personal and income information on their 1099 forms to ensure accuracy before using them to file their tax returns. If any discrepancies are identified, it is important to contact DoorDash support for potential corrections.
