This article guides you through retrieving your BVN using your mobile phone.

Retrieving Your BVN Using Your Phone

The most direct way to retrieve your Bank Verification Number using your phone is through a Universal Service for Mobile (USSD) code. Dial 5650# from the mobile phone number that was linked to your BVN during its initial registration. After dialing, your 11-digit BVN will be displayed on your screen, or you may receive it via SMS shortly thereafter. This service incurs a network charge, often around ₦20, which will be deducted from your airtime balance.

Many financial institutions integrate BVN retrieval functionalities directly into their mobile banking applications. If you have a mobile banking app installed, you can find your BVN within the app’s interface. Common locations to check include the “Profile,” “Account Details,” or “Personal Information” sections. Accessing your BVN through a mobile banking app requires you to be logged into your verified account.

If self-service options are unavailable or unsuccessful, contacting your bank’s customer service provides an alternative. Reach out to the customer service line of the bank where your BVN was initially registered. Be prepared to answer security questions to verify your identity, as this is a standard procedure to protect your financial information.

What to Do If Retrieval Fails

If your attempts to retrieve your BVN via your phone are unsuccessful, a common reason is that the phone number you are using is not linked to your BVN. The system is designed to only release the BVN to the registered mobile number for security purposes. If your registered phone number has changed or is no longer accessible, phone-based retrieval methods will not work.

In such cases, visit a branch of the bank where you originally enrolled for your BVN to update your records. This process involves filling out a BVN modification form and providing a valid means of identification, such as a national ID card, driver’s license, or international passport. The bank will then facilitate the update of your registered phone number in the BVN database, a process that may take a few days to reflect.

If, after troubleshooting, you find you may not have a BVN, enrollment requires a physical visit to any bank branch. Complete an enrollment form and provide your biometric data, including fingerprints and a facial image, along with a valid identification document. Once enrolled, your BVN is sent to your registered mobile number within 24 to 48 hours. Safeguard your BVN once retrieved; never share it with unsolicited callers or unverified websites, as legitimate banks will not ask for it over the phone unless you initiated the contact and your identity is verified.
