How to Get Your BVN Code

Learn how to easily retrieve your existing BVN or complete your new BVN enrollment with our comprehensive guide for Nigerian banking.

The Bank Verification Number (BVN) in Nigeria is a biometric identification system designed to enhance the security and efficiency of financial transactions. Introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), this unique 11-digit number provides a single identity for each individual across the Nigerian banking industry. Its primary purpose is to mitigate illegal banking activities, combat identity theft, and reduce fraud. The BVN integrates an individual’s biometric data, such as fingerprints and a facial photograph, ensuring verifiable identification for all bank customers.

Retrieving an Existing BVN

Several convenient methods are available to retrieve an existing BVN. The most common approach involves using a USSD code. By dialing 5650# from the phone number registered with the BVN, the 11-digit number typically appears on the screen after a brief verification process. This service usually incurs a minimal charge, approximately N20. This method only works if the USSD code is dialed from the specific phone number linked to the BVN.

Alternatively, a visit to any bank branch where an individual holds an account can facilitate BVN retrieval. Upon presenting a valid means of identification (such as a National ID, Driver’s License, or International Passport), customer service representatives can verify identity and provide the BVN. Some banks may also offer BVN retrieval through their official mobile applications or internet banking platforms. Users can find their BVN displayed within sections like “Profile,” “Account Info,” or “Personal Details” after logging into their banking app or internet banking portal. Checking the BVN enrollment slip, if available, can also provide the number.

Information Needed for BVN Enrollment

Before initiating new BVN enrollment, individuals must gather specific documents and personal details. A valid means of identification is essential, with acceptable documents including a National ID Card, Driver’s License, International Passport, or Permanent Voter’s Card. Original copies of these identification documents are required for verification.

Personal details such as full name, date of birth, current address, and a functional phone number are also necessary. A recent passport photograph may also be requested. Having these items prepared in advance streamlines the enrollment procedure.

Steps for New BVN Enrollment

For individuals who do not yet possess a BVN, the enrollment process primarily involves an in-person visit to a commercial bank branch. At the bank, individuals will be directed to fill out a BVN enrollment form. This form collects personal details, ensuring accuracy for unique identification.

Biometric data capture is a crucial part of the enrollment. This involves taking fingerprints and a facial photograph. This biometric information is central to the BVN system, creating a secure and unique digital identity. Following data capture, an acknowledgment slip with a transaction ID is issued. The BVN is generated within 24 to 48 hours, and the individual is notified via SMS or other communication channels.
