The most efficient method is the IRS’s “Get an IP PIN” tool, which requires creating an account and completing identity verification. Applicants must provide their Social Security number, filing status, and address from their last tax return, along with financial account details like a credit card or loan account for verification. Once verified, the system generates the IP PIN immediately. This option is available only during the tax filing season, typically from mid-January to mid-November.
For those unable to use the online method, the IRS allows requests via postal mail. Taxpayers must complete Form 15227, Application for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number, which requires basic personal information and a signature. The IRS conducts a manual verification process that may involve additional documentation. Once verified, the IP PIN is mailed to the taxpayer’s address on record. This process can take several weeks, so it’s advisable to apply early.
