Variable costs, conversely, fluctuate directly with the level of production. These include all factory-related expenses like rent, utilities, equipment depreciation, and indirect labor costs such as supervisory salaries.

Once total production cost for a period is established, businesses can calculate the cost to produce a single unit. For example, if a company’s total production cost for a month was $10,000 and it produced 1,000 units, the unit production cost would be $10 per unit.
