Calculating Net Gain

The calculation of net gain follows a straightforward formula: Net Gain = Total Proceeds (or Revenue) – Total Costs (or Basis/Expenses). To apply this, one must first aggregate all amounts received from the specific transaction or operation. Next, all associated costs, including the initial investment and any subsequent expenses, must be totaled.

For example, consider an individual who purchased shares of a company for $5,000, incurring an additional $50 in trading fees. Years later, these shares were sold for $7,500, with $75 in selling fees. The total proceeds from the sale are $7,500.

The total costs include the initial purchase price of $5,000, the buying fee of $50, and the selling fee of $75, totaling $5,125. Subtracting the total costs ($5,125) from the total proceeds ($7,500) yields a net gain of $2,375. This calculated figure represents the actual profit realized from the investment.
