How to Download 26AS From Outside India?

Get your Form 26AS even when outside India. Discover practical methods and overcome common challenges for remote access.

Form 26AS, often referred to as an Annual Information Statement, provides a comprehensive overview of a taxpayer’s financial activities for a given year. This consolidated statement includes details such as Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), Tax Collected at Source (TCS), advance tax payments, self-assessment tax payments, and high-value transactions. It serves as an important document for reconciling tax credits and ensuring the accuracy of information before filing an income tax return. Properly reviewing Form 26AS helps taxpayers confirm that the taxes deducted on their behalf have been duly deposited with the tax authorities. This process can prevent discrepancies that might otherwise lead to notices or penalties from the tax department.

Essential Preparations

Several preparatory steps are necessary before downloading Form 26AS. A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is fundamental, as Form 26AS links directly to this unique identification number. Taxpayers must have a registered account on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Creating this account requires providing personal details, including the PAN, name, date of birth, and residential status.

A valid Indian mobile number and email address registered with the e-filing portal are required for One-Time Password (OTP) verification. These OTPs are needed for logging in and for various security verifications during the download process. For non-resident individuals, the OTP for initial registration is typically sent only to the registered email ID. Ensure these contact details are up-to-date in the e-filing profile to avoid access issues.

Having an Indian bank account linked to the PAN can provide an alternative method for accessing Form 26AS. Many authorized banks offer this facility through their net banking portals. This linkage allows for direct access to the tax statement from the bank’s website.

Downloading via the Income Tax e-Filing Portal

The primary method for accessing Form 26AS is through the official Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Begin by visiting the e-filing website and clicking on the “Login” option. You will then enter your Permanent Account Number (PAN) or Aadhaar number as your user ID, along with your password. After successfully logging in, navigate to the “e-File” section from the main menu.

Within the “e-File” menu, select “Income Tax Returns” and then choose “View Form 26AS (Tax Credit Statement)” from the dropdown options. The portal will then display a disclaimer, and you must click “Confirm” to be redirected to the TRACES (TDS Reconciliation Analysis and Correction Enabling System) website. On the TRACES portal, you will be prompted to agree to a usage acceptance statement; select the checkbox and click “Proceed.”

Next, click on the option labeled “View Tax Credit (Form 26AS/Annual Tax Statement).” You will then need to select the relevant “Assessment Year” for which you wish to view the statement. Choose your preferred “View Type,” such as HTML for online viewing or PDF for downloading. Finally, click on “View/Download,” and if you selected PDF, you can then choose “Export as PDF” to save the document to your device. The downloaded PDF file of Form 26AS is password-protected, with the password being your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.

Overcoming Challenges from Abroad

Accessing Form 26AS from outside India presents challenges, particularly concerning OTP delivery. One common issue is not receiving OTPs on an Indian mobile number due to international roaming problems or an inactive number. Taxpayers should ensure their Indian SIM card supports international roaming and is active. Alternatively, update the registered mobile number on the e-filing portal to an active one or ensure the registered email ID is accessible for OTP receipt.

Maintaining access to an Indian bank account while abroad can also be challenging if relying on net banking for Form 26AS. Ensure the bank account remains active and that internet banking services are enabled for international access.

In situations where direct access is difficult, taxpayers can appoint a trusted individual in India, such as a family member or tax consultant, to assist with the download. This arrangement requires proper authorization, such as a Power of Attorney (POA) document, granting the representative the authority to act on your behalf for tax matters. The POA must be legally executed.

Other Download Options

Beyond the primary e-filing portal, taxpayers have alternative methods to access their Form 26AS. Many authorized banks in India provide a facility to view and download Form 26AS directly through their net banking portals.

To utilize this method, log in to your bank’s net banking account and look for a section related to tax services, e-services, or a direct link for “Tax Credit Statement” or “View Form 26AS.” The exact navigation may vary slightly between different banks. After selecting the option, you will be redirected to the TRACES website to complete the viewing or downloading process, similar to accessing it via the income tax e-filing portal.

Form 26AS can also be accessed directly via the TRACES portal itself. Taxpayers registered on TRACES can log in using their PAN as the user ID and their established password. Once logged in, the steps to view and download Form 26AS are similar to those followed when redirected from the e-filing portal.
