How to Calculate the Gross Profit Percentage

The gross profit percentage is a profitability ratio that illustrates how much profit a company generates from each dollar of sales after deducting the costs of producing its goods. This metric offers insight into the efficiency of a business’s core operations. It is often referred to as gross margin percentage.

To calculate this percentage, gross profit is divided by total revenue and multiplied by 100. The formula is: Gross Profit Percentage = (Gross Profit / Revenue) x 100. Multiplying by 100 converts the resulting decimal into a percentage, making it easier to interpret. A higher gross profit percentage indicates that more money from each sale is available to cover operating expenses and contribute to the company’s net income. Applying the Calculation with an Example

Consider TechGadgets Inc., which sells electronic devices. For a specific period, TechGadgets Inc. reports Revenue of $500,000 from its sales. COGS for these devices amounted to $300,000.

First, calculate Gross Profit by subtracting COGS from Revenue. Gross Profit = $500,000 (Revenue) – $300,000 (COGS) = $200,000. This $200,000 represents the profit before considering other operating expenses.

Next, use this Gross Profit and original Revenue to determine the Gross Profit Percentage. Gross Profit Percentage = ($200,000 (Gross Profit) / $500,000 (Revenue)) x 100. The division yields 0.40, or 40%. TechGadgets Inc. has a Gross Profit Percentage of 40% for the period, meaning 40 cents of every dollar in sales remains after covering direct costs.
